Glossary of Terms

This is not a complete list, we will add to these terms as we get questons from you, our customers.

CMYK Color Mode

Most jobs will be CMYK or Black only (grayscale). Create and submit files in CMYK color mode. Spot colors may be used if specified in your project quote.

Most software programs offer the choice of working in RGB color or CMYK color. RGB color mode utilizes Red, Green and Blue to create the palette of colors. RGB is used for web graphics and is how computer monitors display colors.

CMYK uses Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black to create the printing palette of colors. CMYK is often referred to as Full Color or 4 Color and is used by printing equipment and presses. Design files created in RGB must be converted to CMYK before printing, which can result in an undesirable color shift.

Image Resolution

This refers to the crispness or sharpness of an image. Resolution is measured in “dpi” (dots per inch) or “ppi” (pixels per inch). Dpi & ppi are basically the same thing.

Files you intend to print should be 300 dpi. Files used on websites are usually only 72 dpi.

The difference can be seen in the example below. A low resolution file will reproduce poorly, like the stop sign on the right. We would describe the stop sign on the right as "pixelated".

Resolution Example

Bleed

When you want your image or background to print all the way to the edge of the paper, that is known as bleed. Your file actually needs to be printed beyond the finished size, and then trimmed to produce this effect. An extra 1/8” should be added on all sides of the image or background you wish to bleed.

Margins

The space between your content and the edge of the paper. We recommend a minimum of 1/8" margins on all sides of your layout.
